Sunset • Encaustic wax monotype on Japanese Kozo paper • 11” x 12” • Encaustic monotype is done by laying paper on a pancake griddle, and using a wax bar to draw on the surface. It melts and fuses as you draw. The paper becomes saturated at some point and will not absorb any more wax. This absorption point is different for each type of paper. You can scrape wax off the paper as long as it is on the griddle. There are silicone tools that work well for this. (R and F Paints) Thin Japanese papers are my favorite for wax monotypes.
